For the past two Sundays, Ziad and I have been cooking a meal for our team. Since my first taste of chapatti, I was determined to perfect the doughy food. Ziad had the task of making breaded chicken wings because we wanted a taste of home, and I made chapatti.
Chapatti is simple. Basically, you need flour, salt, water, oil, and one egg. One aspect of cooking here that I’m definitely not used to is the lack of measuring cups. Everything is measured by hand or a spoon in estimation, which takes some getting used to. The main thing to remember is the process. Winnie insisted on teaching me as opposed to writing down the recipe. So there I was, a rookie, thrown into the kitchen with as little instruction as possible.
The first time I made chapatti was a huge fail. Winnie laughed as I attempted to “measure” everything and she ended up making most of the chapatti herself. However, by the second weekend, after watching Winnie and Agnes, I was able to successfully make chapatti.
Next week we begin homestays! We’re all excited to be immersed in the community, and see what living in the Oyam District is really like.
