Week 2,
June 8 to 12
Monday,
Malaria Prevention
It was our first day in the field. We visited the town of Nakalanga, which was about an hour away from Jinja, The scene there was completely different as civilization was far away. I was able to see thee difference between our host family and the families we met in the village. Kids were dirty and malnourished, yet, they followed us everywhere. everyone was super nice to us. The villagers showed us great respect and hospitality .
Brenda, the head of CCUG, told me about the changes that have been happening in the village. Families where becoming more aware and educated. A few local men approached asking for bed nets for their own families.
Overall, we were able to install 20 bed nets in Nakalanga.
Tuesday,
National Holiday. Hero’s day.
We spent the day Jinja trying to learn more about our selected topics. We finished our posters and got the necessary information for Health education.
Wednesday,
Health Education.
We went to Nile High school where we talked about HIV, addiction, puberty and STDs. Students were genuinely concerned about their future as they showered us from questions that ranged from “How to use a pad” to “How to deal with Sugar dadys”. However, it was hard for to let them engage in the conversation as they were generally quite and reserved.
Overall, we had about 34 students in our classroom.
Thursday
Dish drying Racks.
We visited a family in Wairaka, where CCUG office is located. We got our first experience with manual labor was we struggled to finish the rack. it took us 5 hours to compelte our little creation. We were got off guard as we lacked a lot of the tools that would have made our experience a lot easier.
