Week 2: We Have Visitors!

Wednesday night we were joined by a group of future doctors who formed an organization by the name of MGY. They conduct sessions of medical training for local community health promoters and distribute tablets that can be used to diagnose various illnesses. Daniel Ebbs headed the group. He’s a former UNM Nourish project intern, who was joined by Sam, another Nourish alum. Their chapter worked with Project Amazonas for the past few years, working on the clinic that we’re constructing our tree nursery/medicinal garden around. The following night we all embarked on a night hike through the depths of the jungle, armed with nothing but a mosquito net suit and some flimsy flashlights. Our guides were the always trustworthy Raul and Segundo. No life-threatening creatures were discovered that night, but the subsequent eve we did stare into the eyes of some pretty dangerous animals. That night involved a boat expedition, with the goal of spotting some local Amazon wildlife. The first hour or so of our trip was rather underwhelming, spotting only a couple tree frogs. Things ramped up in hour two with the sight of a sloth perched in the safety of a towering tree, and finally a young black caiman. It was estimated to be about six months old, with the potential to reach 24 feet by the time it matures. We played with tiny green frogs and were victims of some blood-hungry mosquitos for most of the night, but expedition two was definitely a success. Bidding ado to MGY the next morning our team is now awaiting the next bout of visitors to spice up dinner-table discussions.
