Greetings from Iquitos! After a few long days of travel, both members of the 2015 Rice University Project Team, Alex Haer, and myself, Dylan Dickens have arrived in the city of Iquitos, Peru. The largest city in the world inaccessible by road, this city of half a million people is truly a metropolitan island of chaos in a sea of endless rainforest. Tomorrow morning, Alex and I leave by boat for Mazan, a river community deeper into the Amazon rainforest, and our last stop before arriving in the remote village of Santa Cruz. Once in Santa Cruz, we hope to get started quickly on our project, which includes installation and integration of solar energy into the local educational infrastructure. Our time in Iquitos has been short, but not quiet, as we have spent our time exploring the city via motokart. We visited the reputed Bellen Markets, helped feed rehabilitating manatees at the local rescue center, tasted local street food throughout Iquitos, visited the historical and colorful cementerio, ate on restaurant floating on the Amazon, and perused a museum of Indigenous Cultures. Will check in once the project gets started! -Dylan
