Week 1: Sumpango Cooperativa

24 June 2015

Since we arrived in Antigua late on Saturday night, we have spent time getting acquainted with the city and we are looking forward to spending the next two months here.

We have started working with the cooperativa at Sumpango. In order to expand their basil production, we are working on constructing raised garden beds where the basil will be grown.

On Tuesday, our first day of work, we cleared a piece of land and constructed two garden beds.

Our second day was a little more difficult as we encountered rocks and stubborn weeds on the other piece of land. However, we were able to clear a space for the next three garden beds that we will work on next week. The women from the cooperative and the project have gotten off to a great start! We work really well together and have really enjoyed each other’s company. Viviana, the cooperative’s treasurer has served as our leader and she is amazing at keeping everyone on track.

Next week, we will finish constructing the garden beds and we will continue discuss our plans for the rest of the project since it seems that some plans are changing. Even if our schedule and our project changes a bit, our goal will remain the same–to further empower women as social entrepreneurs by ensuring that their businesses are increasingly sustainable and profitable! We will keep you updated as plans shift around.
