Week 2: A Community Celebration

Tuesday of this past week was especially adventure-filled. We were invited to the 47th anniversary celebration of the Santo Tomas community. Festivities began with a church service held by local members of ‘los Hermanos de la Cruz.’ After the service we were graciously welcomed into the home of Santo Tomas’s Director for some chicha (fermented corn drink) which resembled the mix between a slushie of apple cider, and some really sour stuff. Delicious nonetheless! Kind of. The rest of the meal included a chicken soup (liver, feet, and all!), some boiled plantains, topped off with a final course consisting of roasted chicken with rice and noodles. Quite the feast for 10am! During our meal we got to know some members from the neighbouring community of Nuevo Israel, Julio and Maximo. They invited us back to Nuevo Israel for some coconut water and a couple of English-Spanish lessons. Getting back to the fiesta at Santo Tomas was a feat. It involved the cramping of roughly ten people into a canoe which probably only safely fit six. We’re still here to tell the tale so everything worked out for the best.
